Candy Red Lancer Evolution 3:16 Years In The Making

Photos by Drivebyshoots

Sunny is no stranger to the world of modified JDM cars. Throughout the years, he’s owned an array of cool projects, a Mazda 323 turbo, Civic SIR, GSR, VR4, and a bunch of Evo’s.

So when he laid eyes on a beautiful, freshly painted candy red Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 3. He knew he had to have it despite the car being in good condition when he purchased it. He then spent the last 16 years turning it into the impressive build you see today.

With a long list of modifications and a dedication to standing out, Sunny’s Lancer Evolution 3 is an actual labour of love. But as with any build, it hasn’t been without its challenges. As a result, sunny has had to put in a lot of hard work and determination to get the car where it is today.

Interior refresh

Sunny began with the interior, adding Millennium Edition red and black Recaro’s. The front and back seats were then redone, along with door trims to match. He also fitted a roll cage and finished things off with a MOMO wheel, Defi gauges, and Ralliart gear knob.

The goal was to make the car unique and set it apart from the rest. It was a time-consuming process, but Sunny was dedicated and determined to see it through to the end.

An EVO driveline that will last

Sunny decided to replace the entire drivetrain when the gearbox eventually gave out. The car was then treated to an Evo 1 RS LSD gearbox, transfer case, lightened flywheel, and a competition clutch.

He also did a 5-stud wheel conversion to maximise the work Meister’s fitment on the Evo 3 body. It took a lot of time and effort, but the results speak for themselves.

Building the 4G63

Under the bonnet, Sunny has given the motor of his Evolution 3 the attention it deserves. The 4G63 Evo 3 block features Eagle rods, Je pistons, and a Greddy-type R BOV. The car also sports an RSL plenum and 100mm throttle body, with a Link G4 on ECU duty.

Keeping things cool

To keep everything running efficiently. Sunny has added water to the air PWR intercooler. Along with a PWR radiator, custom ice box and 2 Davis Craig fans.

A turbo setup that turns heads

Sunny went with a front-facing IHI XR8 turbo setup, including an RSL front-facing exhaust manifold and twin 38mm Tial wastegates. This unique setup will turn heads and make his car stand out on the streets. It took some planning and careful consideration to get everything right, but Sunny was up for the challenge.

Getting the fuel it needs

Sunny has done a complete overhaul to ensure that his EVO 3 has the fuel it needs to perform at its best. He’s set the car up to run on flex fuel C16 and 98 and fitted Bosch 1650cc injectors.

An Aeromotive Phantom 2000hp in-tank fuel pump provides plenty of flow, while a custom fuel cell ensures that he has enough in the tank for longer trips. Along with an XS fuel regulator and Speed Flow fittings for much-needed reliability. It’s a fuel system that can handle anything Sunny can throw at it.

Building a new motor

Although the current setup is yet to be tuned, Sunny is already thinking about the future. His ultimate goal is to have a 500kw street car; to achieve this, Sunny is building a new motor.

Upgrades include porting and polishing the head. Along with Kelford TX280 cams, Tomei cam gears and Kelford beehive valve. Titanium retainers, Ferrea valves, ARP 207 head studs, and a copper ring racing head gasket.

Styling the Lancer Evolution 3

Sunny has also made sure to give the exterior of his Lancer Evolution 3 some love. The car sits on 18″ Work Meister S13P wheels wrapped in sticky Toyo R888 tyres for supreme grip.

The car was also then lowered on a set of BC Gold coil-overs. Providing the EVO 3 with a more aggressive stance and improved handling capabilities.

To finish off the exterior, Sunny fitted an HKS front bumper, Carbon Fibre bonnet and a set of LED headlights. It’s a subtle touch, but it helps give the car a more modern and aggressive look.

Special thanks

Sunny wants to give a big thank you to everyone who has helped him along the way. Including RSL performance, Tune Tech and Hytech motorsports. NZ Pro Detailers, the team from Boostlikethis Performance, Steve Murch, and Drivebyshoots.

Without their support Sunny’s Lancer Evolution 3 wouldn’t be the impressive machine it is today. So here’s to many more years of building and enjoying this fantastic car.
